It was a pleasure and a privilege to accompany seven of our Year 12 Chemistry A level students to the ‘Chemical Magic’ Lecture at Birmingham University. The chemistry students have been attending the lectures throughout the term which were organised by West Midlands Chemistry Teacher Programme. This lecture was delivered by Dr Ray Plevey and Mrs Rosemary Plevey who have been delivering this inspiring lecture for 43 years! This was the second time I had seen this lecture as I also had the privilege to attend when I was 18! Year 12 students were very enthusiastic about the demonstrations and I hope that this keeps them questioning the reactions or changes that they observe and why do the properties of materials change in extreme temperature? As well as questioning ‘how can this science be used today?’
