Message from the Headteacher

11 June 2021

Dear Parents/Carers

A very warm welcome back to school for all our pupils this week. It is good to see them returning focussed on their learning during this last half term. I hope you all managed to enjoy the sunshine last week. This half term promises to be a busy one with sports day and a super learning day scheduled in July as well as (we hope) the year 11 prom. We are watching the announcements very closely to see if the 21st June date for lifting of restrictions will go ahead. Sadly, Public Health Birmingham are advising that year 6 in to 7 induction days are conducted virtually. This is obviously very disappointing as we hoped we would be able to welcome our new year 7s in to school on this day. However, we will be planning a series of virtual activities and our planned summer schools for these pupils in July and August will be an opportunity to see the school fully then.

This week we had a training day for staff which was dedicated to staff moderating and inputting the final teacher assessed grades for GCSE, BTEC and A level students. This has been a very thorough process which has involved a lot of time and dedication from staff and I would like to thank the staff involved on your behalf for their commitment to ensuring that we have made the very best of a very complex situation. We will be analysing the data internally and putting the final touches together before the final submissions next week.

I am very much looking forward to the virtual parents evening for year 7 next Tuesday. It would have been nice to hold a live parents’ evening as nothing beats meeting parents in person. However there has been a lot of positive feedback from our previous two virtual parents’ evenings and so I am sure this one will be equally as successful.

Sunday’s Gospel is from Mark chapter 4 when Jesus talks to his disciples about the growing seed. He says: “What can we say the kingdom of God is like? What parable can we find for it? It is like a mustard seed which at the time of its sowing in the soil is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet once it is sown it grows into the biggest shrub of them all and puts out big branches so that the birds of the air can shelter in its shade.”

I like to think that this parable has meaning for us all in that no matter who we are and how small we are we have the potential and power to be great. But we must use that greatness for the good and protection of others.

Here’s hoping for an England win on Sunday!

Kind regards

Mr A Grant
