Fifth Sunday of Lent

The Adulterous Woman

The Gospel this Sunday is taken from John’s Gospel chapter 8.

The main focus of this story isn’t necessarily the woman but Jesus.  He is being tested yet again.  The laws say; but what do you say?  The woman is being led to be executed, just as Jesus himself will be led to the cross to die. In this moment of condemnation, he writes on the sand.  He invites us to take our place among the crowd with the following words.  “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”

In one simple moment the splinters fall from their eyes and they walk away.

This Lent we are invited to participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  Taking that first step if we have been away for some time can be very difficult. But taking that first step is what we must do.  Through the priest in ‘Persona Christi’ we will hear the very same words; “Has no one condemned you?  ‘No one sir,’ she replied. ‘Neither do I condemn you,’ said Jesus’ ‘go away, and don’t sin any more.
