It is with sadness that we announce the death of Lord Robin Corbett of Castle Vale. Lord Corbett was the MP for Erdington for many years and was a great friend and supporter of Campion for since the school first opened, presenting at our annual awards evening on 3 occasions and was a judge at Campion's X Factor for the 2 events.
He had been asked to be our guest speaker at this year’s awards evening but was unable to attend due to his battle with cancer.
Lord Corbett died today at the age of 78.
I'm sure you will all share with us your condolences for his wife Lady Val Corbett.
We are saddened to announce the passing of Father Michael Knight who died in the early hours of Wednesday 7th December. Father Knight was the first Chair of Governors of the newly formed St Edmund Campion Catholic School in 1975. Father Knight then continued to serve as a Governor to the school until 2011. On 2nd December 2011 Archbishop Longely blessed the Father Michael Knight Assembly Hall in honour of his long service to the school.
Father Knight will be remembered fondly by the Campion community as an individual who dedicated his life serving others. Our prayers are with his family, friends and parishioners of St Gerard’s Castle Vale at this sad time.
During the summer holidays the school hall had a huge makeover under the supervision of Building Services Manager Peter Fulwell. The hall which had not been decorated since the 1980s had a £7000 facelift with all wood being painted, wooden floor being sanded and polished, new blinds, new drapes, 250 new chairs and new fixtures. All this was made possible by sponsorship from Now Education.
The new hall has been named The Father Michael Knight Assembly Hall after Father Knight’s dedicated commitment and support to St Edmund Campion School for over 35 years.
The finishing touches to the hall have been the plastering of the back wall which now has an amazing religious mural on it by local artist Bruce Jones. The mural depicts the journey of the Catholic teachings through Christ, to Edmund Campion to mass in the school today. On December 2nd 2011 the school will be celebrating the schools Feast Day of St Edmund Campion.
Father Michael Knight of St Gerard’s parish Castle Vale will be in attendance to officially open the school hall.
This year will be extra special with the Archbishop celebrating Mass with our community. For the school Father Knight embodies what a true Campionite should be.
Naming the new hall after him and celebrating his service to our school is very much deserved and we are extremely grateful to him for his support over the years.
The Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales wish to re-establish the practice of Friday Abstinence beginning on 16 September 2011.This may help us to renew our understanding about the importance of penance and self-denial in the Christian Life.Every Friday is set aside as a special day, as it is the day of the suffering and death of the Lord.
The Bishops believe it is important that all the faithful again be united in a common, identifiable act of Friday Penance because it is part of common witness in our society today. The law of the Church requires Catholics on Fridays to abstain from meat or some other form of food or to observe some other form of penance. In order for our community to participate the School Canteen will no longer provide meat on the menu on Fridays.

During the Teacher Training Day on Monday 28th February 2011 Mr Fulwell and a group of students from the Campion Eco Group came into school to work on an Eco Project. The Eco Group spent the day planting bulbs around the school.
Campion Students are the driving force behind Eco-Schools – they lead the eco-committee and helped to carry out an audit to assess the environmental performance of our school. Through consultation with the rest of the school and the wider community it is the students that decide which environmental themes they want to address and how they are going to do it. Measuring and monitoring is an integral part of the Eco-Schools programme, providing our school with all the evidence we need to really shout about our environmental success.
Building Services Manager Mr Fulwell who started working at Campion in September stated “I am extremely proud of the students that came into school on Monday to take part in the Eco Project. This really showed that the students of St Edmund Campion have a real commitment to improving their school environment and developing a more eco friendly school for future generations. I am really happy to be part of the Campion Community”
Campion’s Eco-Schools Programme is focused around nine key environmental topics:
Water
Biodiversity
Energy
Global Perspectives
Healthy Living
Litter
School Grounds
Transport
Waste
If you would like to be involved in the Campion Eco Group and its future projects please see Mr Fulwell.
As part of our strategies for improving school attendance we are adopting The traffic light initiative.
Every student in the school will have their attendance monitored for a four week period starting Monday 24th January 2011.
ALL students were issued with a letter regarding this initiative on Monday 17th January 2011.
A copy of this letter and details of this important initiative are attached.
Attendance at school is of extreme importance and the school works very closely with the Local Authority and Education Welfare Advisors.
The legal action we will take includes: •Issuing penalty notices
• Taking parents to court for unauthorised absence
• Taking parents to court for persistent unauthorised absence
We appreciate your continued support in this matter.
Yours sincerely,
Mr G. Smart & Mrs J. Chance
Strategic Attendance Group
Mr Smart and Mr Fulwell have recently completed a full Environmental Review for the school.
The review is our way of finding out what Eco work our school already does and what it needs to do to become more eco-friendly, it will help us to investigate most of the things we need to look at and help develop ideas for our action plan.
It is also a good opportunity to highlight some of the things that our school has already achieved.
At Bronze level, the school can compose and carry out our own assessment and the results do not have to be recorded. This type of review is termed an informal review.
To achieve Silver or Green Flag status, the school must complete a full environmental review covering all Eco-School themes.
Please take the time to read through our review to see how far the school is moving forward with our Eco-status
