On the first week of Advent we light one purple candle, representing hope.  Isaiah waited in hope for the birth of a messiah who would promote justice and dignity for all. Isaiah’s vision of the Messiah is illustrated in this reading.

A shoot will come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from its roots will bear fruit.

The Spirit of GOD will hover over him,

The Spirit that brings wisdom and understanding,

The Spirit that gives direction and builds strength,

The Spirit that imparts knowledge and respect…

He won’t judge people by appearances,

He won’t be influenced by gossip.

His decisions will be based on what is just and fair.

His words will bring everyone to awed attention.

In school over the next three weeks, we will be preparing a “Way for the Lord.”  Through form prayer, assemblies, reconciliations services and end of term liturgies we will journey in hope for the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.  We will not be caught sleeping, we will awake and be happy for the Lord is coming.

In forms over the next few weeks, we will be collecting foods for the various food banks across the city.  I wish to encourage you to give generously.  On Tuesday 11th December, we will have our Carol Service at the Abbey Church from 6pm – 7pm.  It would be lovely to see as many of you there as possible.

At Christmas we remember how God was made man in Jesus. Through Christ we can fully understand how God wants us to live: acting always with love and mercy for all. When Jesus returned to God the Father, we became his body on earth.  May we this Christmas be Christ’s body to others as this beautiful prayer says:

Christ has no body now but yours

No hands, no feet on earth but yours,

Yours are the eyes with which he looks

Compassion on this world,

Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good,

Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world.

Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,

Yours are the eyes, you are his body.

Christ has no body now but yours.
