Curriculum Intent
Without geography, you are lost. Geography helps us to understand the world and provides a deeper understanding of the contemporary issues facing the planet and our positionality within the world. Furthermore, it explores the interconnectedness of the human and physical world. We study topics and ideas such as inequality, sustainability, population growth and the importance of the natural world. Geography enables pupils to recognise the complexity of the world and equips them with the knowledge and skills to be able to hold meaningful conversations as global citizens. Importantly, geography helps pupils to understand their role in making a difference in the world.
Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3, our ambitious curriculum teaches students a range of geographical skills and develops their understanding of their place in the world. We invite our pupils to marvel at the complexity and design of our natural world whether that be volcanoes, tropical rainforests deserts, rivers or coasts. We discuss the impact of humans on the planet and consider how we might mitigate against climate change, desertification and deforestation. We consider the role that geopolitics plays in shaping our existence, particularly focusing on development and inequality. Our students can expect to broaden their worldview on a variety of countries such as Nigeria, Russia, China, India, the UK and Kenya.
Key Stage 4
Key stage 4 builds on the knowledge, skills and ideas from key stage 3. We study topics that explore the physical world such as natural hazards, rivers and coasts. Pupils will also deepen their understanding of the impact that humans have on the planet as well as further exploring how people’s lives are shaped by geopolitics. Pupils will learn to discuss the changing economic world and urban issues and challenges. Pupils participate in geographical skills development and fieldwork giving them the chance to consolidate their understanding of the world.
Key Stage 5
A Level geography offers our students the chance to study traditional physical topics such as Coastal Landscapes, Hazards and Water and Carbon Cycles. Pupils will explore contemporary topics such as the concept of place in Changing Places and Contemporary Urban Issues. Pupils participate in a residential field trip where they will deepen their understanding of fieldwork skills.
