Message from the Headteacher

29 November 2019

Dear Parents/Carers

This Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent which marks the start of the new liturgical year for the Catholic Church. The first Candle lit on the Advent wreath is referred to as the Prophecy Candle. Its colour, purple, which is the liturgical colour for the Advent season, reminds us that this season is a special time of prayer, sacrifices and penance. The lighting of this Candle is a wonderful symbol of our hope for the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Advent is a very special time for us here at St Edmund Campion Catholic School and please do take the time to read this newsletter and see all the things going on. We have a carol service on 17th December in school which is always a very special occasion. Our Christmas party for local VIP residents is always a highlight of the year (my nan and grandad are very much looking forward to it!), and we will be ending the year with our very moving liturgical services. I am looking forward to seeing our Christmas tree in the foyer and I’ve also been invited to the nativity play at the Abbey school which I am very excited about!

This period of time is also special for us as we celebrate the feast day of our patron, St Edmund Campion, next Friday (6th December). School will be finishing early on this day with pupils being sent home at 12.30. It is a real opportunity for us as a school to reflect upon who we are and appreciate how fortunate we all are to be part of this very special community.

It has certainly been a week filled with hope. Year 12 and 13 Parents’ Evening on Thursday was very well attended and it was great to see so many parents there taking a vested interest in their son or daughter’s learning.

We also invited the local candidates for the Erdington constituency to a hustings event in school on Wednesday. We welcomed candidates from the Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrats, Brexit and Green parties. The questions posed by our students in the sixth form were pertinent, well thought through and really challenged the candidates. The debate was lively and gave our sixth formers real insight in to the world of politics and how it affects us on a daily basis.

Our teacher training day last Friday was an excellent day with a focus very much on our curriculum development. We welcomed Mr Tom Sherrington (www.teacherhead.com) to the school and he sat with each department to look through their planning and curriculum. The discussions were very insightful and gave us a lot to think about as well as confirming some of the excellent practice being undertaken throughout the school.

Thank you as always for your continued support. It is always very much appreciated and please do spread the word about how wonderful our school is!

Kind Regards

   Mr A. Grant
