Year 7 Maths Challenge

14 February 2020

Our Year 7 Maths Challenge took place at St Edmund Campion School yesterday morning. This is always a highly competitive event and there was great excitement from all of the pupils anticipating the challenging rounds and activities they would be taking part in.

For the first time in the seven years we have been running the events we had all ten schools confirmed to attend a competition. Unfortunately, we lost Cardinal Wiseman at the last minute due to flooding at the school (we wish them all well) but we still had 17 teams.

We had teams of four Year 7 pupils from Archbishop Ilsley, Bishop Challoner, Bishop Walsh, Cardinal Newman, Holy Trinity, St Peters, St Edmund Campion and St Thomas Aquinas and one team from St Pauls’ Girls. All credit goes to St Edmund Campion for once again organising a challenge with so many teams.

The competition began with a table task which required teams to work out a number of Logic questions. Teams were then split in to break out rooms for a series of problem solving and mathematical challenges including the 24 Game, Escape Room task and Maths Relay.

As always we had a room full of incredibly talented Mathematicians, but after a hard fought competition we ended up with our winners on 93 points. Congratulations to the winning team from St Pauls’ Girls for their excellent achievement, particularly impressive as they only had one team.

Many thanks to Chris Bates, Joe Hussey and the Maths team at St Edmund Campion for their excellent hospitality and for organising, setting up and hosting our biggest event of the year. There are requests for a year 8/9 event next year, so watch this space!
