Message from the Headteacher

10 January 2020

Dear Parents/Carers

Happy New Year to everyone and a warm welcome back to all our pupils and staff. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break and that 2020 brings you all happiness, joy, good health and success. We welcome also the new members of staff who begin their Campion journey with us this term.

Being the start of a new year, my assemblies this week have focussed on what our young people can do to make a real difference for themselves not just this year, but with their remaining time left at school. I talked about this being a new decade and encouraged the pupils to think about where they want to be at the end of the ‘20s, a mere ten years from now! Based on a report from the Department for Education, I spoke about some of the different New Year’s resolutions they could make. The research in the report talks about the positive effects on GCSE outcomes of homework, reading for pleasure, extra-curricular activities, good behaviour in school, aspirations and knowing future plans to work towards, not just in year 11 but throughout a child’s schooling. The report makes interesting reading and you can read it here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/understanding-ks4-attainment-and-progress-evidence-from-lsype2. I will send my assembly out to parents via Parentmail so do look out for it.

Already this week has begun in earnest. As a staff we were fortunate to be able to spend the day at St Mary’s Oscott College on Monday as part of our staff spiritual retreat day. Oscott College is the oldest English-speaking seminary in the UK and if you haven’t done so already, it is well worth a visit especially for the stunning chapel there. http://oscott.net/  We were lucky to hear from Father Brian McGinley who spoke to us about what the Word of God means for us all and gave us the opportunity to reflect upon our vocation. Thank you to Father for his time.

Next week is our second Super Learning Day of the year and we are very much looking forward to all the activities and workshops planned for the day. We have pupils going to Oxford and to Blackwell court as part of the day, as well as inviting in entrepreneurial guest speakers and having workshops and productions for year 9 on mental health.

As we begin 2020 it is always worthwhile to reflect on our mission and our faith. These words from St John’s first letter are a good way to reflect on the forthcoming year and on our faith:

“…and whatever we ask we shall receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do what is acceptable to Him.

His commandment is this, that we should believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ and that we should love one another as He commanded us.

Whoever keeps His commandments remains in God, and God in Him. And this is the proof that He remains in us: the Spirit that He has given us.”

Kind Regards

Mr. A Grant
