Our principal aim is to inspire students' interest and excitement in the essential field of Health and Social Care, and nurture and support their natural enthusiasm for supporting others. Through a guided programme of learning, we will look to provide our students with the knowledge and understanding of the principles of care provision, growth and development as well as how to establish and maintain individual wellbeing. Our curriculum centres on the key elements of human development and how this is nurtured through the application of specialised care and a heightened awareness of physiological and psychological reasoning. 

 

Through our application of a carefully designed learning framework, BTEC students within Health & Social Care will be empowered to achieve. Teaching and learning is focused particularly towards the needs of vocational learners, and challenges them beyond their perceived academic limits. Apply this through the lens of Health & Social Care, students will be able to establish their own perceptions of how care is provided, being able to analyse care provision and consider future options through a developed understanding.

This qualification gives learners the opportunity to build applied knowledge and skills that how an aptitude for further learning, both in this sector and more widely. Student progress in Health & Social Care is centred around well-established BTEC assessment approaches and innovative teaching and learning strategies, that are proven to be successful in building applied knowledge and skills and motivating learners to engage fully with challenging study. Those studying Health & Social Care, acquire sector-specific applied knowledge through vocational contexts, by studying human lifespan development, health and social care services and values, and health and wellbeing.

Component 1: Human Lifespan Development- Coursework -30%- Feb-May Year 1

In this component, students will study how people grow and develop over the course of their life, from infancy to adulthood, this includes PIES development and the different factors that may affect this. An individual’s development can be affected by major life events, such as marriage, parenthood or moving to a new house and you will learn about how people adapt to these changes, as well as the types and sources of support that can help them.

Providing good health and social care services is important and service providers need to have the appropriate skills, attributes and values to meet the needs of service users. These skills, attributes and values are important because they enable people who use health and social care services to get the care they need and to be protected from different sorts of harm. This component will give learners an understanding of health and social care services and will help you to understand the skills, attributes and values that are common across the sector

Component 3: Health & Wellbeing- External Assessment -40%- May Year 2

Students will explore the factors that affect health and wellbeing, learning about physiological and lifestyle indicators, and person-centred approaches to make recommendations to improve an individual’s health and wellbeing. In this component, students explore the factors that can have a positive or negative influence on a person’s health and wellbeing. You will learn to interpret physiological and lifestyle indicators and what they mean for a person’s state of health. Students learn how this information is used to recommend appropriate actions for improving a person’s health and wellbeing. Additionally, you will explore the difficulties an individual may face when trying to make these changes.

Where will this take me?

Study of the qualification as part of Key Stage 4 learning will help learners to make more informed choices for further learning, either generally or in this sector. The choices that learners can make post-16 will depend on their overall level of attainment and their performance in the qualification. Once complete, this qualification will generally be followed by a combination of A Levels and study of a vocational qualifications at Level 3, such as a BTEC National in Health and Social Care. Such qualifications prepare learners to enter employment or apprenticeships, or to move on to higher education by studying a degree in the health or social care sector.

Those studying Health & Social Care, acquire sector-specific applied knowledge through vocational contexts, by studying human lifespan development, working in health and social care, meeting individual care and support needs and psychology.

 

 

Unit 1: Human Lifespan Development- 25%- External Assessment- May Year 1

This unit will develop learner’s knowledge and understanding of patterns of human growth and development. Students will explore the key aspects of growth and development, and the experience of health and wellbeing. Learners will learn about a number of theories and models to explain and interpret behaviour throughout the human lifespan. In this unit, student’s will also explore the impact of both predictable and unpredictable life events, and recognise how they impact on individuals. Finally, study will also explore the interaction between the physical and psychological factors of the ageing process, and how this affects confidence and self-esteem, which in turn may determine how individuals will view their remaining years.

Unit 5: Meeting Individual Care & Support Needs 25%- Coursework-Sept-May Year 1

In this unit learners will investigate the values and principles of meeting care and support needs and look at some of the ethical issues that arise when personalising care. All students will examine factors that can impact the professionals who provide the care and support, and the challenges that must be overcome to allow access to good quality care and health services. To support this, learners explore the different methods used by professionals across all care services. This allows student’s to reflect on these methods when considering the importance of multi-agency working in providing a package of care and support that meets all the needs of individuals.

Unit 2: Working in Health & Social Care- 33%-External Assessment- Jan Year 2

Learners will explore the range of roles and general responsibilities of people who work in health and social care settings. Students will also develop an understanding about the organisations that provide services in this sector, and the different settings in which these services are delivered according to the needs of the service user. Learners will then analyse ways these services are provided and about the barriers that can prevent people from getting the services they need. The overarching theme of this units links to working with people with specific needs, including ill health, learning disabilities, physical and sensory disabilities, and the needs of people who occupy different age categories.

Unit 11: Psychological Perspectives- 17%-Coursework- Sept-May Year 2

In this unit, students will learn about the different psychological perspectives that have been put forward and how these approaches have influenced thinking and practices in meeting and supporting service user needs. Using this knowledge, Learners will explore some key ideas that will give them an understanding of how the mind develops, and the factors that influence development and behaviours. This knowledge is useful in developing an understanding of how these perspectives have formed the basis of different techniques to manage behaviours, and the therapeutic and other interventions used in the health and social care sector
